Practical Considerations

Comforters

We allow comforters to be brought into pre-school, however, staff may remove these at an appropriate time and keep them safe until the end of the session. Due to health and safety requirements children will not be able to take part in some activities with a dummy or bottle in their mouth.

Nappies

We welcome children from the age of two. If your child is not toilet trained please provide:-

  • nappies

  • wipes or cotton wool and lotion

  • nappy sacks

  • at least two changes of clothes in a named bag

When your child is ready to toilet train Little Swans staff will be happy to help in any way they can. Please discuss your child’s requirements and arrangements with a member of staff.

Uniform

Uniform is not necessary but optional polo shirts, cardigans and sweatshirts with the Little Swans logo on are available to purchase.

Refreshments

We operate a ‘milk bar’ which is available for half an hour each session at approximately 10.00am. Children are encouraged to sit down around tables at snack time and can choose milk or water to drink, and seasonal fresh and dried fruit and vegetables to eat, as well as other healthy snacks.

Please ensure staff are aware of any food intolerances, allergies or dietary requirements that your child may have.

Drinking water is available throughout the session. Children may bring their own drink bottle and this kept on the table by the door throughout the session.

Lunch

If your child stays for lunch, we ask that you provide a healthy packed lunch which will be stored in the fridge until lunch at 12pm. We ask that you name the lunch box and we are a nut-free preschool so no nut products. Thank you. For ideas on what to put in their lunch click on the links below:

Afternoon Snack

In the afternoon, at around 2 pm the children may have some milk and breadstick if they wish.

Behaviour

Children attending Little Swans are encouraged to be considerate towards each other. If behaviour causes concern, staff will work closely with parents to develop a strategy for dealing with the problem. We ask that you inform us of anything that may cause your child to exhibit unusual behaviour.

We regularly talk to the children about their feelings and other children's feelings. We have a 'thinking chair' where a child is supported by an adult to talk about things they shouldn't have such as hurting their friends. We openly discuss these situations with the parents at home time.

To encourage and reward good behaviour we have a behaviour board and certificates.

Star of the week, certificates awarded for 'big' achievements in their development or behaviour e.g using the toilet, or helping a friend who is hurt and many more! They may also be chosen to take home on of our monster Maths bags for the weekend, to write in and add pictures of what they do.

Star of the Day, which are awarded for those 'little things' that happen everyday e.g helping a find their toy, helping to tidy and many more.
